On Wednesday, January 8, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gautier held its monthly Senior Citizens’ Luncheon. For over forty years, St. Mary’s has hosted a monthly senior citizen gathering that has evolved over time. Present day, the lunch takes place on the second Wednesday of the month. Seniors are invited to participate in a celebration of Mass at 11:15, which is followed by the lunch, where around fifty parishioners attend each month. While each month is a won- derful gathering, January’s lunch is always extra special because it features everyone’s favorite winter meal -- soup! Ten soups were on display with crock pots lined up in front of each proud chef. Attendees could sample as many soups as they wanted, along with all of the extra soup flair such as cornbread, tortilla chips and cheese. Tomato basil, cabbage, taco and of course, broccoli and cheese, were just some of the soups that parishioners got to sample. Homemade desserts followed and everyone loved getting to try all the variations of soups. Diana Myers, a St. Mary’s parishioner for over sixty years, leads the “Kitchen Angels,” the church’s group of volunteers who help prepare meals for church events. Myers and the Kitchen Angels thought soup would be a fun twist on their normal lunches as a typical soup recipe makes enough to feed a small crowd. “What better way to share with others than through food,” Myers remarked. “And there’s something about warm soup in cold weather that just makes you feel good.” S t .
