It is really a miracle in one sense and, in another sense, a wonderful call and a wonderful challenge. Q -- What advice would you give to a new bishop? Amelia Lora, 4th Grade, St. Alphonsus Elementary School, Ocean Springs BK -- Pray, pray, pray! Love your people and love your priests. Q -- With so much conflict in the world today, how do you continue to form intentional disciples in our diocese? Blake Williams, 12th grade, St. Patrick Catholic High School, Biloxi BK -- Part of it is your formation, because, in the end, our young people are really what it is about. We are making a strong effort to move our parishes, our schools, all of our ministries, and organizations to realize that is really what we need to be doing -- forming intentional disciples -- and to center on the Great Commission that Jesus gave us in Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 28. St. Patrick School is one of the ways. All our different ministries, all the parishes, and all our schools need to be on board to do that. We are right at the beginning of being able to make that kind of shift, so pray for the shift and that the shift happens in each and every one of us. Q -- I’ve noticed that a lot of young people leave the Church. Why do you think this is? Esmeralda Stadthagen, 10th grade, St. Patrick Catholic High School, Biloxi BK -- Well, there are many different reasons why people drift from the Church. I will come at it from this direction: If someone is in love with the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ, and they have a relationship with Christ and with His Church, they will never leave. For those young people that have left, something was missing. It goes back to being a disciple of Christ. If a person is a disciple of Jesus, they are going to follow Him no matter what, in the good times and the bad, and find His love there. I think that we, as a Church, need to be aware of what is happening and begin to walk with our young people in faith. We need to be more hospitable to young people so that they feel welcome in our faith.
