Gulf Pine Catholic • November 26, 2021 7 St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy Providing medicine to people in our community who cannot afford it My Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy works to fill a tremendous gap in healthcare each day by providing lifesaving medication to those who cannot afford it. In 2020, SVDRPX provided or secured medication for 640 clients in South MS. The total number of prescriptions filled by the Pharmacy’s locations was 30,100. The value of the medication dispensed was $1.5M. We are proud to say that the Pharmacy has not closed during the Covid-19 pandemic and all who need help were served. We’ve not changed what we do, we’ve just changed how we do it! Because of operational changes during the pandemic we now utilize less volunteers, but work multiple days a week. Our 60 plus volunteers still worked over 15,000 hours last year. They serve in a multitude of capacities, including: Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, eligibility screeners, front office administration, and inventory specialists. In addition, there is a paid full-time executive director, one full-time case manager, and one part-time case manager. Again, all during this Covid 19 pandemic, our SVDPRX has continued to operate both its locations in Hattiesburg and Biloxi. The program operations have changed some to keep clients, volunteers, and staff safe, but medicine has continued to be filled for those in need. Because of the dedication of the volunteers throughout our Diocese, not a single client has missed a prescription fill. Those individuals that were effected by job loss or insurance changes because of the pandemic continue to be served as well. The Diocese of Biloxi’s special second collection for the SVDP Community Pharmacy, which will be taken up the weekend of December 4 and 5, provides an excellent opportunity for each of us to assist in this ongoing work of charity to serve the poor. Because the pharmacy is primarily staffed by volunteers, 93% of every contributed dollar goes directly into the provision of program services. I ask the parishioners of our diocese to support this noble cause and I pray that you will be abundantly blessed for your charitable effort to help the poor. Bishop Louis F.
