Gulf Pine Catholic • October 1 2021 15 K nights of C olumbus Big Sister-Little Sister is a mentoring ritual between the senior and freshman classes that was started in 1976 at Our Lady Academy (OLA). The senior Class of 2022 continued the Big Sister-Little Sister tradition during a special prayer service at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church this past Friday. Days before the prayer service, the seniors, maintaining their anonymity, left ornamental gifts in their little sister’s lockers for them to wear on the unveiling day. The gifts were intended to be used by the freshmen little sisters as clues to their big sister’s identity. The following day, the unveiling ceremony was held in the gym where seniors wrapped themselves in wrapping paper and attached a gift tag, identi- fying their little sister’s name. Freshman anxiously searched for their name and unwrapped their big sister to reveal their identity. The ceremonial act of “passing the torch”, which occurs when the big sister lights the little sister’s candle, was observed during Friday’s prayer service. The torch rep- resents the beginning of a special bond of sisterhood between the seniors and fresh- men. The seniors will take on the responsibility of helping their adopted little sisters navigate their paths to a successful first year of high school. Class President Ella Taylor addressing the freshmen class, advised them that they can count on their big sisters for advice or guidance whether it is school related or not. She added, “High school comes with many exciting new experiences, but it also comes with added responsibility, and sometimes that can be a lot to handle. Know that we have all been through what you will be going through, and we are here to help you, guide you and encourage you. We will celebrate your happy moments and will lift you up on your hard days. The Class of 2022 is honored to adopt the Class of 2025 as our little sisters in Christ.” L-R Family of Mushrooms: Senior Nadia Karamat, Freshman Emma Cain, Senior Sydney Burrell L-R Senior Eugenie Saunders passing the torch to Freshman Julie Pigott OLA continues mentoring program O ur L ady A cademy , B ay S t .
