Gulf Pine Catholic • March 6, 2020 15 Deacons attend annual three-day retreat About half of the deacons in our dioceses, most with their spouses, attended an annual three-day retreat at the Manresa House of Retreats in Convent, LA from February 17-19. Fr. Richard Buhler, S.J., was the retreat master and did an excellent job presenting some highlights of Ignatian Spirituality. Finnegan named 2020 Poet of the Year Brenda Brown Finnegan of Ocean Springs was recent- ly named the 2020 Poet of the Year by the Mississippi Poetry Society. She will be honored at the annual Poetry Festival, April 4-5, at Lake Tiak-O’Khata, Louisville, MS, with an award and a book signing of her new chapbook, Horn Island Vista , published by the Mississippi Poetry Society. A book signing locally to be announced later. She and her husband, Martin, a permanent (ordained) deacon in the Catholic church, moved to Belle Fontaine Beach in Ocean Springs in 1991, when he became director of religious education and associate pastor at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, until his retirement. Awriter of poetry, fiction and nonfiction, she is a char- ter member of the MPS South Branch and she has served as president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary, as well as president of MPS. Her poetry collection, Missing Persons , was published by the state society in 2001 when she won the first MPS Poet of the Year award. She also received a Lifetime Achievement award from MPS. She has been published in sever- al journals, including MPS awards journals and anthologies, and in Mississippi Magazine , The Magnolia Quarterly , Coastlines , Back Porch , The Texas Review , Boyne Berries 5 in County Meath, Ireland, in Encore , the contest journal of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies, and her poetry has been recognized in Writers Digest magazine’s con- tests. She has also been published in several Gulf Coast Writers Association’s non-fiction anthologies and contests and met the late Willie Morris who spoke at the first GCWA contest awards ceremony.
