Gulf Pine Catholic • July 27, 2018 13 D iocesan H appenings Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral held their third annual ‟Fun in the Son” Vacation Bible School June 25-29. Seventy-three children, ages 4-12, enjoyed a week full of activities surrounding faith, fitness and fun. Parishioners from Immaculate Conception Church in Laurel braved the humidity and celebrated their annual 4th of July festivities with grilled hot dogs and hamburg- ers, as well as, reinstating what was once a crowd favorite tradition of having an on-site ice cream contest. Several unique flavors of ice cream were entered in the contest with Carolyn Adam’s grape soda ice cream taking home bragging rights. The community also prayed the Holy Rosary in honor of the country. The rosary along with patriotic hymns were led by Bill Gatzman and Rusty Tisdale on the front area and steps of the church’s main entrance. Over a hundred parishioners attended the festivities. The celebration culminated with fireworks being set off from the Sawmill Square Mall parking lot which was located not too far from the church. Parishioners would like to extend special thanks to the ICC Knights of Columbus and ICC Parish Life Ministry for their ministry to our church family. Immaculate Conception Church is located on 833 West Sixth Street, Laurel. The parish pastor is Msgr. Michael Thornton who recently celebrated 49 years of service as priest, and the associate pastor is Father Ignacio Jimenez.
