SVdP Pharmacy From page 10 “We rebuilt from scratch,” said Pavlov. “We had people reaching out from all over to send us significant amounts of money.” One of the most remarkable gifts was a $100,000 donation from the Czech Republic to restock the pharmacy. “Their ambassador came over to present it to us. It was a big highlight for us,” said Pavlov. Thanks to the generosity of so many, the pharmacy is no longer in a trailer. Instead, it is located in the Coastal Family Health building on Division St, where Pavlov continues to volunteer as program coordinator. “I can’t tell you the joy it’s brought me,” she said. “The people I work with are amazing. You don’t have to supervise anybody here. They come, they do their job and they always try to make it better. It’s a miracle every day and, every day, you see the hand of God here.” Doing the math – the numbers tell the tale The pharmacy has more than doubled its prescription output since about 2010. “In the last seven years, we were doing about 13,000 or 14,000 prescriptions a year. This past year, we topped 30,000 prescriptions and we’ll top 32,000 prescriptions this year,” Burke said. “That growth is absolutely steady. Sadly, that need is not going in the other direction. I’d have to find another job, but we’d all like to go out of business. That’s just not the reality.” The pharmacy began helping the poor in the community with prescription medicine assistance in May of 1998, and since then has filled 201,400 prescriptions for those in need. The value of medicine dispensed to those 3,664 people totals more than $12,000,000. Burke said the majority of the clients served are 150 to 200 percent below the poverty level. “These are individuals that are not otherwise going to buy their medicine,” he said. The SVDPRX utilizes more than 100 volunteers to provide administrative duties, eligibility screenings, case management, and medicine dispensing. This includes 13 licensed pharmacists who dedicate their time and expertise to ensure that all medicines are dispensed safely. “We are able to put 93 percent of almost every dollar we raise directly into our program of work, because of most of the people around this room that volunteer their services,” said Burke. “I’ve done the math, and it’s like $2.5 million in payroll that we don’t pay, which allows us to do what we do every year.” To learn more about the SVDP Community Pharmacy and how you can help, visit www.svdprx.org or call (228) 374-9097.
