In the school lobby, visitors were greeted with Earth Day inspired art created with the recycling of household items. Students began the day with prayer and a special presentation of the song, “Colors of the Wind”, by sixth grader, Lauralee Pellegrin, and fourth grader, Gia Encrapera. After a short skit based on the book, Earth Day, Birthday! by Maureen Wright, stu- dents were treated to cupcakes. Students gathered out- side with Christian Stephenson of the Hancock County MSU Extension Service to learn about seeds, plants, and recycling. Each student was given their own seed and biodegradable pot to bring home. As the day continued, classes focused on small group learning. Sixth grade students learned to use t-shirts and make a recycled bag. The fourth and fifth grade classes conducted water tests from the Mississippi Sound for phosphates, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. The relationship between camouflage and prey was the topic of learning for the second and third grade. First grade and PK4 students followed Freddy the Fish on his adventures through a stream filled with toxins. The Kindergarten class dabbled in watercolor for an Earth art project. PK3 had the experience of fol- lowing the life cycle of a butterfly and saw butterflies emerge from a chrysalis. Students were treated to an Earth Day-inspired lunch of loaded baked potatoes, broccoli, and “dirt pudding”.
