Volume 35 No. 20 www.biloxidiocese.org June 1, 2018 Catholic Catholic Charities opens Hattiesburg office in Holy Rosary Parish Center BY TERRY DICKSON HATTIESBURG -- With the opening of a new Hattiesburg office, the Diocese of Biloxi’s Catholic Charities will be able to minister to more people in the Pine Belt. The new office is located inside the Holy Rosary Parish Center, located at 900 Dabbs Street, and is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment. Bishop Louis F. Kihneman felt that it was imperative for Catholic Charities to establish a physical presence in the Hattiesburg area. “Catholic Charities does so much good for so many people throughout our diocese,” Bishop Kihneman said. “To be able to expand its ministry in the Hattiesburg area through the establishment of a new office at Holy Rosary Parish is a real blessing. We pray those who visit this new office will come to experience the love of Christ in a very special way.” It has been five years since Catholic Charities closed the doors at its previous Hattiesburg location and, although the agency has continued to offer utility assis- tance to people in Hattiesburg and the surrounding com- munities, as well as disaster relief for a string of torna- does, having a physical presence will allow for the provi- sion of even more services. “This office will initially provide case management and assistance with utility bills,” said Jennifer Williams, director of Catholic Social and Community Services, who is one of two case managers who will work at the Hattiesburg site. Charo Sneed, who is a Holy Rosary parishioner, will also serve as a case manager. “Eventually, we will grow to offer some of the other services that our other outreach offices have. As always, we provide disaster relief services, migration and refu- gee services and representative payee services that can all be accessed out of this office,” added Williams. Williams said having the option of operating out of Holy Rosary Parish is a real blessing. “We want to thank Father Ken Ramon-Landry and the parishioners of Holy Rosary Parish for allowing us to have a home here on site,” she said. “We’ve been looking for a place for some time. When Father Ken made the offer, we jumped at it because it’s the perfect place for us. We’re excited to work with the parish to meet the needs of the community.” Father Ramon-Landry is proud of and excited about the role Holy Rosary will play in minister- ing to those in need of assistance. "When Jennifer came to me asking if Holy Rosary Catholic Church would have some space to open up a new office for Catholic Charities in the Northern Deanery I jumped at the opportunity. I asked the community and they overwhelmingly said yes,” he said. “We, as a community of faith, have always been involved, since our founding in 1949 in issues that affect our community whether it was with the recent tornado last year or back in the 60’s during the tumultuous years of Civil Rights where Holy Rosary was a catalyst for change through the leadership of Father Peter Quinn. I feel like opening this office opens up a new chapter in Holy Rosary's life as a community of faith serving a diverse community. Our com- munity fully supports it and even contributed financially to making this dream a reality for those in need: the least, the little, the lost and the forgotten. My prayer is, as it prospers, so will Holy Rosary as we get our second wind and serve the people of God in the Northern Deanery. I am proud Bishop Louis and Jennifer and Holy Rosary believe enough in Holy Rosary to be a place of service, love and giving." Pope announces June 29 consistory to create 14 new cardinals VATICAN CITY ( CNA/EWTN News ) -- There will be a consis- tory June 29 to create 14 new cardinals, each of whom express the “universality” of the Church, Pope Francis announced Sunday after his Regina Coeli address. “Their provenance expresses the universality of the Church that continues to proclaim the merciful love of God to all people on earth,” he said May 20, noting that the new cardinals from the Diocese of Rome also show “the inseparable link between the see of Peter and the particular Churches spread throughout the world.” “Let us pray for the new cardinals, so that by confirming their adherence to Christ, the Most Merciful and faithful High Priest (see Hebrews 2:17), they will help me in my ministry as Bishop of Rome for the good of the whole faithful People of God,” the pope said. Among the newly appointed cardinals is His Beatitude Louis Raphael Sako I, the patriarch of Babylon for the Chaldean Catholic Church and the archbishop of Baghdad. Those from the Diocese of Rome and the Holy See who have been named are: Archbishop Luis Ladaria, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; Archbishop Giovanni Angelo Becciu, sub- stitute of the Secretariat of State; Archbishop Kondrad Krajewski, papal almoner; and Archbishop Angelo De Donatis, Rome’s vicar general and archpriest of the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran.
