Gulf Pine Catholic • May 18, 2018 17 Spotlight on Schools OLF Elementary honors the Virgin Mary as “the Queen of May” with a May Crowning. The May Crowning was held outside the chapel at Our Lady of Fatima Parish. The students, faculty, family members, and guests gathered to honor Mary by singing special songs devoted to Mary and listened as the sixth grade students read from Scripture. Our Lady of Fatima Elementary School, Biloxi Fourth graders in Jackie Odenwald’s and Danique Freeman’s classes at St. James Elementary School recently completed Bottle Biographies in their reading class. The students chose a person of interest. After reading and researching, the students wrote their biography and then used a 2-liter bottle and various supplies to create a model of their person. St. James Elementary School, Gulfport Stephanie Ariatti’s first grade class at St. James recently performed “Contraction Surgery” after studying a unit on contractions. St. Vincent de Paul fourth through sixth graders have been challenged to learn more about our Catholic faith. Sr. Cecilia Nguyen, CCSS; provided each family with ‟1001 Catholic Trivia” questions. For this school year, every Friday morning after Mass, she quizzed the children on 20 questions from the list. Some of the questions included ‟What is the name for the great reli- gious, social, and political upheaval from 1517 to 1648 that divided the Catholic Church?” and ‟The literal meaning for this world is ʽwitness’ Name this word.” The classes tried to be the class that could answer the most questions. Last week four (4) finalists were chosen to compete in the final contest for the year. They were William Magandy and Ava Schmitt in fifth grade and Alexander Mink and Elizabeth Walton in sixth grade. They studied the questions that were used all year. Then on Friday, April 27, after Mass Sr. Cecilia quizzed the four on 100 of those questions while the rest of the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades watched from the pews. Alexander Mink was the winner with 45 correctly answered questions; Elizabeth Walton came in second with 38. Sr. Cecilia is rewarding the four contestants with her delicious home- made egg-rolls, and she is treating them to a movie and all the popcorn they can eat!! Everyone looks forward to the trivia quizzes after Mass because it helps them to learn more about their faith in a fun and (friendly) com- petitive way. Sister also brought handmade rosary bracelets for each of the students in fourth-sixth grade and all the teachers. She asked everyone present to pray one Our Father and ten Hail Marys every morning.
