16 Gulf Pine Catholic • May 18, 2018 Spotlight on Schools Holy Trinity first grader, Helen Hoffmann, has been named the Mississippi grade- level winner for the Zaner- Bloser National Handwriting contest. The contest, in its 27th year, promotes legible handwriting, as well as helps students develop literacy skills. Helen’s handwriting sample was submitted by first grade teacher, Sarah Nolan. For her outstanding achievement, Helen received an engraved State Winner medallion, and Nolan received an engraved diamond award. Holy Trinity also received a $200 Zaner-Bloser award to benefit the school. Helen’s award makes her eligible to compete for a Grand National Champion title. Winners will be announced sometime in May. Nolan and Hoffman Holy Trinity Elementary School, Bay St. Louis Our Lady Academy (OLA) Senior Callee Breland and Junior Kati Albright took home the Class I State Golf Championship at the Tupelo Country Club golf course. Callee Breland, named as the individual cham- pion, shot 76, 74 for a total of 150. Kati Albright shot 92, 89 for a total of 181. The team posted a score of 331, seizing the win and the 2018 State Championship title for OLA. “I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to my senior year and my last walk on the greens as a Crescent! I have been fortunate to have a great coach who happens to be my dad. I am also grateful to have my teammate Kati share this season’s end with a Championship title,” said Callee. Callee has committed to Loyola University of New Orleans. OLA Golf Team Senior Callee Breland and Junior Kati Albright. Our Lady Academy, Bay St. Louis JACKSON, MS -- Our Lady Academy (OLA) Junior Youth Legislature delegation attended the Annual YMCA Junior Youth Legislature in Jackson, Mississippi. Junior high school students across the state of Mississippi attended the conference held at the State Capital to experience the political process of signing a bill into law. The Mississippi Junior Youth Legislature conducts a mock legislative session wherein the students present their bills in hopes of having it signed into law. As in the official Legislature process, the bill must be passed by both chambers of congress, before making it to the Youth Governor’s desk. Delegates Arryana Kellum, Jame’ Karno, Reagan Mortillaro, Samantha Prendergast, Abby Randall, Cali Reinhart, Karlie Dunn, Aennia Bridges, Julia Hazlette and Kate Montjoy represented Our Lady Academy. Of the ten bills submitted, debated and voted on, ten made it to the Youth Governor̕s desk, and two of the bills were passed and signed into law. The signed bill, requiring proof of insurance when applying for a new or renewing a Mississippi license plate, was written by Abby Randall and Cali Reinhart. The second bill passed was written by Jame’ Karno, Samantha Prendergast and Reagan Mortillaro, requiring all teach- ers to be CPR certified and recertified every two years. OLA received other accolades from this Legislative session. Arryana Kellum was the recipient of the ‘Statesman Award’ which is the most distinguished award a delegate can earn at the conference. In addi- tion, Abby Randall, Cali Reinhart, Jame’ Karno and Arryana Kellum received recognition as outstanding legislators and Cali Reinhart was selected as committee chairman. OLA history teacher and youth legislative advisor, Elise Cuevas expressed, “Youth Legislature is a fantas- tic opportunity to meet other students across the state that have similar interests. Housey earned this recognition by achieving the highest ACT score of this year’s senior class. He scored a 34 out of a possible 36. Housey recognized Saint Stanislaus French and English AP teacher, Jennifer Kayes, as his STAR teacher who has had the most influence on his high school educational career. The STAR Student-Teacher Recognition (STAR) Program is sponsored by the Mississippi Economic Council and its M.B. Swayze Educational Foundation. Saint Stanislaus STAR teacher Jennifer Kayes com- mended Housey on his work ethic in the classroom: ‟Boyd has a promising future ahead.
