Gulf Pine Catholic • May 4, 2018 22 Spotlight on Schools St. Patrick senior Matthew Bisner was selected as the TOP ALL-STAR Scholar for the state of Mississippi at the STAR Program Education Celebration in Jackson. The program is hosted by the Mississippi Economic Council. Based on his selection, Matthew will receive a $24,000 scholarship,provided by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc. In total, St. Patrick Catholic High School had five STAR students and five STAR teachers, listed below. All five students were included in the STAR 30 Club, in which they achieved an ACT score of 35 or 36. Out of 330 stu- dents, 120 were in the STAR Club and Matthew was the TOP ALL- STAR Student. Jackson was named a semi- finalist in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Jackson is the son of Gary and Linda Jackson of Gulfport. Only six students from Mississippi were named semifinal- ists. Eligibility for the program requires that students score exceptionally well on either the SAT of the College Board or the ACT of the American College Testing Program, based on tests taken during the two-year window that begins in September 2015 and runs through October 2017, (for the recognition cycle concluding in June 2018), that each be nominated by their Chief State School Officer (CSSO) or nominated by one of our partner recognition organizations based on outstanding scholarship. Application for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is by invitation only. Jackson Tayler Ibele recently signed her letter of intent for the Christian Brothers University track and field team today. Tayler performs in both the shot put and discus categories for the SPCHS track and field team. Third from left, Ibele is pictured with her family. St. Patrick High School, Biloxi As a class service project, the fourth grade class of Holy Trinity recently hosted a food fight among the classes to benefit the Hancock County Food Pantry. Each morning the fourth graders would collect and count items gathered in each classroom. A total of 807 items were collected, and though the competition was fierce, the fourth grade class claimed first place with a donation of 216 items. Holy Trinity is a Catholic elementary school for children ages two through sixth grade that is committed to teaching and modeling Catholic Christian morals and values, while creating a safe, caring, and respectful environment that supports academic excellence and a love of learning. Holy Trinity Elementary School, Bay St. Louis St. Stanislaus College, Bay St. Louis Nancy Gex Artigues has been appointed academic dean at St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis for the 2018-2019 school year. Artigues has worked in the Bay-Waveland School District since 2015. Prior to her time in the Bay-Waveland School District, she worked at St. Clare Elementary and then Holy Trinity Elementary from 2002 to 2015. A graduate of Our Lady Academy, Artigues earned a bachelor’s degree in psy- chology with a minor in education from Tulane University and a master’s degree in education at the University of New Orleans. Artigues is married to Ronnie Artigues, Jr., a 1984 graduate of Saint Stanislaus. Their son, Jonathon, graduated from Saint Stanislaus in 2015. Artigues replaces Thomas Mavor who is returning to Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. Artigues Three Saint Stanislaus students were recently awarded the highly coveted Eagle Scout nomination. Chase Johnson, Nickolas Clogher, and Drew West took part in what’s called the Court of Honor. Each student must start working on badges as soon as he transitions from Cub Scout to Boy Scout. It typi- cally takes between five and six years for a scout to earn the rank of Eagle. The final requirement to obtain Eagle Scout status is a community service project. Upon completion of the project, scouts go before a board of review. The board interviews the scouts, and the scouts explain their projects and get tested on what they have learned in their scouting years. Daniel Grieves, a 2011 gradu- ate of St. Stanislaus, has been named director of alumni rela- tions. Grieves was a member of the Rock-a-Chaw state champi- onship basketball team in 2011 and has over five years of experi- ence working as a senior prefect and camp director at Saint Stanislaus. As the point person for alum- ni relations, Grieves will report to the advancement director and will oversee all alumni involvement and participation at the school. He earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies and psychology from the University of Louisiana-Monroe and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in organiza- tional communication from Southeastern Louisiana University.
