Established in 1872 by missionaries from Mobile and New Orleans, this parish served all parishioners until it was segregated in the 1920’s. During this time St. Stephen’s Mission Church and School was established to serve the black commu- nity. Following the destruction of Our Lady of Good Hope Church by Hurricane Camille in 1969, St. Stephen’s, once again, opened its doors to Catholics of all colors, thereby becoming the first church to be desegregated in the state of Mississippi. Having fallen into dis- repair during the last seven years, the citizens of DeLisle rallied to save this vital piece of Mississippi history. With visions of a community center to host cultural events, educational and work-force training The Legacy of Community: A Concert to Benefit St. Stephen’s Cultural Community Center PASS CHRISTIAN (April 10) -- Join world- renowned classical guitarist, John De Chiaro, on Sunday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Pass Christian, for an afternoon of beautiful music benefiting the St. Stephen’s Cultural Community Center in DeLisle, Mississippi. The American classical guitarist, Giovanni De Chiaro, made his debut in 1976 in a Carnegie Hall per- formance that brought a rave notice from the New York Times and launched a career of distinction. He has pre- sented seven solo recitals at Carnegie Hall and more recently performed there with the Mississippi Guitar Quartet, an ensemble he established. He has concert- ized throughout the United States, South America, Canada, Europe, and Mexico, and has performed for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in Rome. He also was invited to perform for President and Mrs. Bill Clinton for two special Christmas functions at the White House. De Chiaro has recorded his guitar transcriptions of the complete works of Scott Joplin, two Christmas CDs, a Broadway collection and a Wedding Album. His latest release entitled “Melodie d’Amore” features his guitar transcriptions of familiar piano masterpieces from the Romantic Period. De Chiaro has recorded two nationally televised programs for PBS which have won top honors at sev- eral national and international film festivals. He was also featured on the National Public Radio program “All Things Considered” discussing and performing several of his Scott Joplin transcriptions. His record- ings are regularly featured on the NPR programs “Classical Guitar Alive” and “Performance Today” . His most recent recording features De Chiaro with the London Symphony Orchestra performing the Concierto De Chiaro , an original guitar concerto composed especially for him by conductor and composer Kermit Poling. De Chiaro will perform portions of this concerto during the St. Stephen’s benefit concert. CDs will be available after the con- cert, and De Chiaro has promised to donate his portion of the proceeds to the St. Stephen’s Cultural Community Center. Until it was decom- missioned in 2011 and became part of Most Holy Trinity Parish in De Chiaro opportunities, an evacuation shelter, and a history museum, the St. Stephen’s Cultural Community Center non-profit was formed to restore the existing church structure and return it to its position as the center of DeLisle community life. The Legacy of Community benefit concert was envisioned by Father Patrick Mockler of Most Holy Trinity as a way to garner interest in and raise funds for this important restoration project. Father Mockler states, “This concert promises both a rare opportunity to see De Chiaro perform on the Mississippi Coast, as well as, a chance to hear two of the Coast’s favorite sopranos, Judith D’Angelo and Deana Landry.” The concert will be followed immediately by a small reception. Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church is located at 9062 Kiln Delisle Road in beautiful Pass Christian.
