She was such a blessing to serve with, my young adults loved being with her and had great respect and were shocked at how much she did behind the scenes of Search Retreats and CYO Conventions.” Seminarian Braxton Necaise formerly served as youth minister at Sacred Heart Parish in Dedeaux and, thus had the opportunity to work closely with Sargent. “When I think of Brenda, one of the most recent conversations that I recall having with her was at a Diocesan Search weekend. That year, my former Search team had volunteered to come back to the Diocesan Retreat center to work in the kitchen to feed the young people who were attending Search. We were there to cook and to really do what Brenda told us to,” said Necaise. “Brenda was a person who worked tirelessly. I recall the countless weekends that she would stand at a stove cooking for the young people of the diocese. She made do with what she had. Brenda had a way of mak- ing the most sincere and special things with what she had. We were talking about Martha and Mary and I asked Brenda who she related to the most out of the two sisters of Lazarus. Brenda said, ‘I always say, things wouldn’t get done if we didn’t have Marthas.’ Brenda was a Martha, but she also knew when it was time to be Mary.” Sargent was a true inspiration to Kirsten Logos, who also battled cancer, but is now in remission. “She showed me how to live a full, faith-filled life. I had the pleasure of working with her on multiple occasions. She was a hard worker, and always incorpo- rated God in everything she did. I got to know her on a deeper level when I was diagnosed with Leukemia. She shared with me her previous battle with cancer. We were able to share stories with each other, because she knew what it was like to go through it all. Besides my mom, she was my number one supporter,” said Logos. “In October before everyone knew of her diagnosis with pancreatic cancer, I received a text from (current Youth Director)Ray Lacy. He encouraged me to come and visit Brenda, so I did. As I was sitting in the kitch- en with her, she told me what was going on. After everything was said, she informed me that she had lived a good life, and that she was ready. She was ready to be with our Heavenly Father, and with her husband. My heart melted, but I also found peace.” Deacon Norbert Lloyd grew up with Sargent in Back Bay Biloxi and recalled how, as children, they used to play a game called “The Monroes,” similar to Little House on the Prairie, and another called “McDonalds” where they would drive up to the steps of the back porch and pretend to order take-out. However, he said some of his fondest memories of Sargent are from their time together in CYO at St. John, including the weekly dances and the annual Mardi Gras ball. Even though time caused them to drift apart, Deacon Lloyd said that, whenever they reconnected they would inevitably talk about the good old days on Back Bay. “They were just really good memories that, every time we got together, we’d talk about them,” said Deacon Lloyd. In the time leading up to Sargent’s death, Deacon Lloyd visited, prayed and even sang with her. “It was just an opportunity to be present to her,” he said. “She was always glad to see me, but she wasn’t really glad to see Norbie Lloyd. She was glad because of who I brought. I brought Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, and she knew and believed solemnly in the real presence of Christ.” Sargent is preceded in death by her husband James “Jim” Sargent; paternal grandparents Chester and Gertrude (Fergonis) Newman; maternal grandparents Lawrence “Dee” and Elenora (Swansine) Previto; father-in- law, Richard Sargent; and her brother-in- law Eddie Sargent. Survivors include her parents Wiley and Susan (Previto) Newman; sister, Gertrude Newman; brother, Wiley (Ester) Newman; niece, Olivia Newman; moth- er-in- law, Mary Sargent; sister-in- law, Julie Sargent; brothers-in-law, Rick, Billy and Bobby Sargent; and several other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. She is also survived by her girls (cats) Izzy and Chelsea. Brenda Sargent From page 11 D iocesan E vents ( cont . from P age 2)
