18 Gulf Pine Catholic • March 23, 2018 Spotlight on Schools “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” - Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island Recently, St. Stanislaus was well represented at the 2018 High School Art Exhibition held at the Gail Keenan Art Center in Long Beach. Over one hundred artists from around the Gulf Coast submitted entries that were judged by local artists and professionals in the field. Junior boarding student Jack Winstead placed second overall in the competition while Senior boarding student Eason Zhang and Freshman day student Andrew Dufrene saw their artwork advance to the exhibition round. St. Stanislaus College, Bay St. Louis Our Lady Academy (OLA) senior Callee Breland signed a Letter of Intent on Thursday, March 1 to play golf for Loyola University of New Orleans, Louisiana. Callee picked up her first club at the age of twelve and has played for the Crescents since eighth grade. Posting a four (4) handicap, Callee was named 2016 Mississippi High School Athletic Association (MSHSAA) All-State Second Tournament Team, 2016 MSHSAA District Tournament Championship, Kelly Gibson Championship Tournament runner-up, Mississippi State Amateur Championship runner-up, USSSA National Golf Tournament runner-up, 2017 MHSAA Golf Championship runner-up, 2017 Clarion Ledger Second All State Tournament Team and the 2017 MHSAA District High School Girls Tournament Championship. Loyola coach, Andrew Goff stated, “I’m thrilled to have Callee joining the Loyola women’s golf team next season. She’s a well-rounded player that brings with her a raw, competitive talent that will be a great addi- tion to the program as well as the university. I’m excited to see her grow as a student athlete.” Callee, an OLA honor student throughout junior high and high school, is the vice president of the math- ematics honor society Mu Alpha Theta, treasurer of National Art Honor Society, a member of the National Spanish Honor Society, the National Honor Society, Student Council, Campus Ministry, Interact Service Club, Crescent Athletic Club and the captain of the OLA golf team. As her father and coach, Keith Breland said, “Callee is an amazing daughter, student, and athlete. She has always strived to be the best she can be at everything she does and always with a smile. We are excited that Callee will be playing golf for Loyola. We know she will advance to the next level under Coach Goff’s leadership.” Marilyn Pigott, acting principal added, “We are very proud of Callee’s academic and athletic accom- plishments throughout her years at OLA. She is an outstanding young lady, and Loyola is blessed to have her as a member of their women’s golf team and a stu- dent at the university.” Jennifer Breland, Callee Breland, Loyola golf coach Andrew Goff (back), father and coach Keith Breland. Our Lady Academy, Bay St. Louis Our Lady Academy (OLA) students took home 15 awards at the MS Region VI Science and Engineering Fair on February 29, held at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention Center. OLA was represented by ten stu- dents all of which received an award for their project. Four of the 15 awards received were first place win- ners. OLA student Marguerite Gelpi walked away with five exceptional awards for her development project on the restoration and sustainability of the wetlands enti- tled ‘Rip Rap and Roll for Peat’s Sake’. She was pre- sented with the Stockholm Junior Water Award, the NASA Earth System Science Award, and the Arizona State UniversityWalton Sustainability SolutionsAward. For the second year in a row, Gelpi was the recipient of the Student Award for Geoscience Excellence present- ed by the Association for Women Geoscientists and in Earth and Environmental Sciences. In addition, she also received third place in the Earth and Environmental Science category. In the seventh-eighth grade Organic Chemistry cat- egory, OLA students swept the awards with Julia Gelpi winning first place, Addison Capo taking second place and Reagan Mortillaro capturing third place. In the Biochemistry Category, Ashleigh Bulot placed second and Annie Bean came in fifth place. Continuing to cap- ture the awards, Claire Whitney won first in the com- puter and math category, and Taylor Wypyski and Aly Theobald captured first and second places respectively in the Robotics Category. Another first place award went to Cali Reinhart in the ninth-tenth grade inorganic category. The first, second and third place winners will advance to the State Science Fair to be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Jackson State University.
