In this model, classes of the same grade or age group are spending their day in the self-contained environment of a learning suite with access to their own toilet rooms, hallway hand-washing stations, water bottle fillers, anddirect access to the exterior for exerciseor outdoor learning. This inherentlyal- lows for separating groups of students in the school while still allowing for community, collaboration and active learning. Some districts are renovating the school grounds to create a variety of outdoor play and learning areas accessible by sepa- rate groups at different times. This will inherently increase ac- tive learning on campus, which is beneficial to effective learn- ing during and after the current public health crisis. • Health and hygiene. While the pandemic is a unique challenge, we have learned that simple health and hygiene steps can help reduce its spread. Increasing hand-washing sta- tions throughout a school and even transitioning traditional faucets to infrared touchless faucets canhelpColorado schools and students this fall. Moreover, many schools may look tomake their health clin- ics larger and more visible. If possible, they may even design them with direct access to the outdoors so they can quickly move any infected students or staff out of the building with- out risking further contamination. The school year ahead will look markedly different in Colo- rado K-12 schools. However, the past months have made clear that virtual learning creates challenges around effectiveness, equity andmore. That’s why school districts are doing all they can to welcome students back this fall. As they navigate that remarkable challenge, several districts will redesign spaces andsystems throughout their facilities. It’sakeysteptoensure a safer experience for all students and staff. \\ aweber@cannondesign.com ELEMENTS Reopening Schools Schools will adapt in order to facilitate in-person learning.
