March 2018 \ BUILDING DIALOGUE \ 53 IMAGES: LaCasse Photography 3 1. Employees can curl up with a good book in The Lodge. The library atmosphere – complete with a custom Design Within Reach stove, brick-pattern vinyl wall covering and rattan-look hanging chairs – is perfect for contemplative breaks. 2 . A work café with booth seating, beer taps and game tables draws employees away from their desks and into socializa- tion. Around the corner, orange picnic tables edge the pantry: self-serve healthy eating. Within the 12-foot volume created by open ceilings, the mass of a shipping container continues from the reception area, housing the kitchen’s functional storage. 3. The tech-enabled board room receives a high-end look with wood slat ceiling and massive stone-topped table. 4. A challenging “racetrack” floor plate (see diagram below) with four circulation pinch points necessitated wayfinding cues that lead to neighborhood landmarks. 5. Small cafés are paired with open office areas throughout the office, each with its own visual identity. Here, solid surface mimics raw steel. 6. The reception area welcomes visitors with vibrantly lit sig- nage in the elevator corridor. A living room style waiting area is defined with a suspended grid. Concentrating small meeting areas directly off of this reception area facilitates quick meet- ings with visitors without needing to disrupt the focused work in the office areas.
