/ BUILDING DIALOGUE / DECEMBER 2015
Publisher’s Note
Growth. Continues.
T
he Westin Hotel at DIA is open for business. RTD continues testing the A Line, which
is set to open for passenger travel in the spring, between DIA and Denver’s Union
Station.
The Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center is slated to break ground by
year’s end, bringing with it thousands of construction jobs.
Denver voters last month passed ballot measure 2C, which will fund the overhaul of the Na-
tional Western Complex, creating a year-round venue.
Cranes continue to dot the skyline, in the city, in the suburbs, even around the state. As
newcomers continue to choose Colorado, growth continues throughout the state, and it’s really
visible in Denver. Commercial construction here is blooming, even booming, and it can be seen
in all sorts of properties, from the very pointed appearance of the CoBank Center in the Denver
Tech Center to an infill gem, the MOTO apartments in, well, the middle of town.
Cherry Creek isn’t being left behind either. Gables Cherry Creek is a new luxury community
taking root in the revitalized landmark neighborhood while 100 St. Paul, the new space for the
neighborhood's First Bank branch, is taking up residence at First Avenue and St. Paul.
We’ve got all of these stories featured in this month’s issue, as well as a spotlight of Brad
Tomecek and his Boulder-based, award-winning firm.
Not to be left out, the trends this month range from hospitality to 3-D technology in real
estate marketing, from memory care design to landscape planning technology. P3 projects is
another hot topic, as is niche construction – for the arts.
Some interesting projects around town: how The RMH Group helped upgrade and mod-
ernize mechanical and electrical systems for the St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in
Denver; RTA Architects’ thoughtful design of the Moffat School in Saguache County; and Ware
Malcomb’s classic design – with a modern twist – of AMG National Trust Bank’s new corporate
headquarters in Greenwood Village.
Columnists in this issue look back 10 years to discussions of zoning, density and design – in-
sights that remain relevant today; turning to resilient design, whose aim is to anticipate disas-
ter and disruption; Kirkland Museum is making an inspired move to the Golden Triangle; and
what is the nature of successful collaborative spaces?
Finally, take a look at the Breckenridge Brewery photo spread (anyone else getting thirsty?),
our landscape design Postcard and a couple of Boulder gems in our Landmarks section.
Once again, it’s been inspiring to learn about your projects and passions. I look forward to
covering even more of them in future issues.
