Performing Arts | Voice-Over Acting for Stage AND Film Stage and film acting are close cousins, but they employ different techniques and degrees of emotional expression. The most successful actors in Colorado work in all media: theatre, movies, commercials, and voice-over. Join, for 4 weeks, an ongoing workshop that explores various acting methods and develops your audition skills. Explorations include voice/speech warm-ups, monologues, and scene study, all adjusted for your professional goals in stage and/or film. All exercises are recorded on your personal DVD. Training covers the “biz”: resumes, headshots, and how to get a talent agent. This ongoing workshop brings in participants of all levels of performance experience. You’ll work in front of a mike and cold read two commercial spots, followed by critical and positive feedback. Bill Smith (SAG and AFTRA) has five decades of stage and film credits as actor, director, and producer. He taught conservatory acting at Cornell University and created Denver’s The Acting Studio in 1982 to train stage, film, and voice-over actors. Begin with techniques in voice/speech dynamics and warm- ups. Find out how to create your demo website of voice samples to get your foot in the door of this potentially lucrative industry. What equipment do you need to build your home voice-over studio? You’ll rehearse and record a range of “copy” such as TV/radio commercials, infomercials, narration, animation, and audiobooks. Receive MP3s of your studio sessions. Learn mike technique, interpretation, and characterization. Be ready to work hard, do homework, and get feedback on your strengths and weaknesses. Audiobooks are the biggest voice- overgrowth industry in the last decade. Audiobook voice-over work can be a solid source of income and is enormously gratifying. Learn how to voice fiction and nonfiction books. Find out about equipment and software you need for your home studio, and how to set it up cost effectively. Explore different styles of voicing nonfiction (history, biography, science, e-books, self-help, etc.). Learn how to bring a novel to life, which requires a narrator and suggestions of character voices. Find out how to market your talent. Bill Smith of The Acting Studio, coaches all niches of VO. In the last few years, dozens of his VO students have voiced audiobooks, for pay, for the national company ACX.com.
