The patterns and principles of geometry have been used throughout the ages in art, architecture, and sacred rituals. In this unique workshop you will create beautiful geometric designs using a compass and a ruler. If you are a dabbler, you will have the chance to explore your creativity without needing any previous training. If you are an artist, designer, craftsperson, or mathematician, you will be able to transfer what you learn to revitalize and deepen your interests. Working with geometry can be a contemplative practice that can bring us into direct relationship with our experience and to what Socrates called “ever true.” Marney Babcock studied design at Arapahoe Community College and sacred geometry at the Prince School of Traditional Arts in London and Chartres cathedral in France. In this unique drawing class, we will further the exploration of the amazing world of geometry by constructing a rose, or wheel, window. The design is based on the thirty-four uppermost rose windows in the nave, transepts, and ambulatory sections of Chartres Cathedral in France, which was built mostly between 1194 and 1220. The construction begins with a circle, then through lines, giving birth to the square, then to the octagon, and then to the hexa-decagon (sixteen sides). The hidden underlying structural shapes use geometry in three different ways to produce a final design that is a symbolic and unified whole. Marney Babcock studied design at Arapahoe Community College and sacred geometry at the Prince School of Traditional Arts in London and Chartres cathedral in France. Marney recommends that students take The Art of Geometry (course #1959) first, but it is not required. The required materials are the same for both classes. $81 Non-Member $69 Member $120 materials fee purchased by student CFU LOWRY : Near 1st & Quebec 1960E: One Sat., 10AM–4PM 5/1 1960F: One Sat., 10AM–4PM 7/10 Handcrafted Soap Easy Melt & Pour Technique Learn how to make beautiful looking handmade soap without using lye or toxic chemicals.
