Linoleum Block Printing
Block printing is a wonderful way to create
expressive and detailed prints using blocks
of linoleum. A middle ground between the
arduous and imprecise art of wood block
printing and the ease and simplicity of
stamp making, linoleum block printing lets
you create fine art prints using tools that are
safe and inexpensive and materials that are
easy to acquire as well as clean up. In this
two part class, Printmaker
Ryan Youngblood
(MFA Fine Art 2008) will guide you through
the steps in a fun and informative way.
Join him on a journey from idea to sketch
to block carving to printing with individual
guidance and advice. Ryan will insure that
by the end of the class you will know how
to make and print any idea you might have,
and know the right materials, tools, and how
to use them safely and effectively. Although
this class will teach you to print onto paper,
linoleum blocks can be used over and over
again to print onto almost any surface
including clothing and are an inexpensive
way to make professional fine art prints at
home.

Botanical Sketching
Are you a creative who lacks confidence
in your drawing skills or one who wants to
add nature sketching to your toolkit? This
course will teach you how to see and draw
like an artist. Using basic supplies and a
mixed media sketchbook you will develop
your artistic “muscle.” Botanicals are great
subjects for sketching because their beauty
is pleasurable to observe and capture.
Furthermore, the nature sketching skills you
learn translate to drawing other subjects
as well. We will use flowers and fruits as
our “models” and you will also learn to
analyze and artfully interpret a picture or
photo. This course will introduce you to
the elements and principles of art and get
you started making confident marks and
identifying shapes; using contour drawing
to sketch natural objects; adding highlights
and shadows; and adding texture, pattern
and color.

Basic Drawing
Drawing as Seeing
To draw well, you have to see well. The
mind wants the hand to draw as it imagines
things appear rather than what the eye
observes. Come learn to see with the eye of
an artist and experiment with many basic
drawing techniques such as contour, line,
and gesture drawing as well as dealing
with negative space. We’ll explore the
fascinating process of describing three-
dimensional objects on a two-dimensional
surface (paper) in a way that evokes
realistic representation.

Beginning Colored Pencil
Techniques
Drawing and shading with colored pencils
is not hard once you learn some basic color
theory and learn how to “see” the rainbow
of colors that can be used to describe
something as simple as a blueberry
or apple. Class will focus on learning
and implementing three colored pencil
techniques: layering, underpainting, and
burnishing. Practice each technique and
then choose a colorful photograph to create
a more elaborate drawing from.

from a selection of colorful photographic
images (you choose what appeals to you).
Class assumes very basic drawing skills.

NEW! Zentangle®-Inspired
Art
Have you dipped
your toe into
Zentangle®,
learning the basic
tangles? If you’re
ready to take it
to the next level,
this is your class.
Start with a quick
overview of tangles to use and then
combine those with ones you’ve learned
in the basic CFU Zentagle® class (or the
equivalent) to create pieces of art for
display. The May session celebrates family
heritage, creating a decorative square
that honors a family name, a new baby,
or special occasion. Choose a template,
add borders, draw tangles throughout
the square, and leave with a decorative
piece perfect for framing and hanging it
on the wall. Knowledge of 10-15 tangles
or two basic CFU classes are required
for this session. Please bring with you:
a Micron pen, soft pencil and sharpener,
a blending smudger for shading and any
type of colored pencils or pens and the
instructor provides the rest.
