Such is the power of “The Spiritual Exercises” of St. Ignatius of Loyola, which provides the basis for Ignatian spirituality and has influenced millions of people throughout the past five centuries. For most books, readers usually skip or skim the preface or foreword, a repository of acknowledgements and expressions of gratitude. The preface to “The Spiritual Exercises” is a wholly different story, with 22 “Annotations,” or introductory notes, that set the entire context for what follows. The Annotations are the focus of this year’s Ignatian Silent Retreat, to be held Oct. 11-13 at the Redemptorist Renewal Center. Directing the retreat this year is Jesuit Father Felix Just. Father Just teaches in the Catholic Bible Institutes of several dioceses in California and Arizona. He is a member of the editorial board for revision of the NewAmerican Bible, and an active member of the Catholic Biblical Association of America. The retreat format will include time for silent prayer, large-group presentations, communal liturgies, an opportunity for confession and/or brief individual conferences with Father Just, and optional small-group faith sharing. To make a reservation or get more information, email Ann S. Dickson at anndickson@theriver. com or call (520) 234-2140 or email Deacon Paul Duckro at pduckro@diocesetucson.org or call (520) 349-0615. Diocesan leaders in three key departments have changed recently. Attorney Anne Morales started last February as Chancellor, succeeding Kathy Rhinehart who retired. Father John Arnold, pastor at St. Mark’s in Oro Valley and administrator at St. Christopher’s in Marana, began as Moderator of the Curia and Vicar General July 1, replacing Msgr. Jeremiah McCarthy, who is taking a one-year leave of absence to teach at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio. Juventino Solano was named executive director of diocesan Catholic Cemeteries, replacing Thomas Hanlon, who retired. Morales is a Tucson native who practiced real estate law for more than 25 years. She has won numerous awards for her practice, including the 2014 St. Thomas More Award, given to an outstanding Catholic lawyer. She serves on the parish council at Sts. Peter and Paul where she has been a youth minister for almost 20 years, and has taught theology at Salpointe Catholic High School, both in Tucson. “I love it here. It’s a blessing,” Morales said. “I am working with talented people and with the priests God has called to serve here.” Father Arnold was ordained a priest on June 6, 1998, in St. Augustine Cathedral by Bishop Manuel D. Moreno. He was a second vocation priest, having graduated the University of Arizona in 1978 and from Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington, with a law degree in 1982. He joined the Vocations program and entered Sacred Heart Seminary in Hales Corners, Wisconsin, in 1994, graduating four years later with a master’s in divinity. He also attended The Catholic University of America, 2005-06, completing a licentiate in canon law. “The Diocese of Tucson is a mission, not a club,” Father Arnold said. “We all have the obligation to serve and evangelize our neighbors. I am looking forward to my time of service in the mission of our diocese.” Solano started his career in 2010 as a cemetery representative for a combined business in Tucson, serving families with immediate needs and pre-need. He soon became a location manager and in January 2018, he joined the pre-need team at Holy Hope Cemetery. On July 8, he became the new executive director.
