The schools in the Diocese are: ANNUAL COLLECTION SUNDAY Weekend of Sept. 28-29 . 9 By MICHAEL BROWN Managing Editor The 2019 diocesan Catholic Men’s Conference will be coming “home,” gathering at the new Pastoral, Education and Conference Center at Cathedral Square Nov. 2, with the theme, “Strength in Numbers.” Keynoters include Redemptorist Father Dennis Billy, speaking on “Living and Dying in Christ – Our Growing Band of Brothers,” and Catholic therapist Randy Cirner, speaking on “Keep Paddling.” The Cathedral Square center is located at 192 S. Stone Ave. #2, next door to St. Augustine Cathedral. Diocesan Pastoral Services Assistant Director Joe Perdreauville urged men interested in attending to register online early, because attendance will be limited to the first 400 registered. “We had 500 (men) attend the first year. This is the sixth one and we have had between 300 and 400 each year,” he said. Keynotes will take place in the second- floor conference center, with lunch served on the first floor. Perdreauville said the event brings together many familiar faces every year. “We get a lot of repeat business every year. We want them to reach out and invite other men to come too.” Registration is available online at tinyurl.com/yynu594t , and walk-ins will be accepted if space permits. Cost is $45 for adults, $25 for college students and $10 for young men 18 or younger. Father Billy teaches theology at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore. He has doctorates in church history fromHarvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and in spirituality from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome. In 2018, he published “Going Beyond the Wound: A Spirituality for Men.” In his book, Father Billy writes: “Many recent books on male spirituality have focused on the so-called ‘father-wound.’ Although women also suffer from troubled relationships with their fathers, this wound has a strong, sometimes devastating effect on men. Typically, the father-wound is presented as a deep tension within the male psyche resulting from not having a strong father image during a man’s early childhood and adolescence. This absence reverberates throughout a man’s being and makes him feel unloved, unworthy of attention, and incapable of meeting the demands and expectations of his father. Men with a poor self-image often project this lack of acceptance onto their relationships with others. If not resolved, it can manifest itself in unhealthy, even destructive ways.” (pp. 41-42) Cirner is fromAnn Arbor, Michigan, and holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology with master’s degrees in clinical counseling and theology. Writing for catholictherapists.com , he said “ My Christian beliefs and world view guide my respect for and treatment of all clients. I have treated clients from a wide range of cultural and spiritual backgrounds. I integrate the science of psychology with a foundation of the Catholic faith to anyone who requests it.” The men’s conference begins with registration at 8 a.m. and a recitation of the rosary at 8:40 a.m. That will be followed by welcoming, music and gathering prayer. At 9:45 a.m., Father Billy will speak for about an hour, followed by a brief break and a witness talk. Cirner speaks for an hour, beginning at 11:20 a.m., followed by lunch and the opportunity to go to confession. Participants regather at 1:45 p.m. for music, with another witness talk scheduled. Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger will join the keynote speakers for a Q and A panel discussion, from 2:30- 3:20 p.m. The afternoon concludes with movement into St. Augustine Cathedral for Mass beginning at 3:50 p.m., with BishopWeisenburger presiding. ‘Strength in Numbers’ men’s conference at Pastoral Center
