CATHOLIC OUTLOOK 5 MAY 2019 Frances Negrette, 98, mother of Deacon Robert Negrette of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Tucson, died March 4. A funeral service was celebrated March 11, followed by burial. Balaswamy Narra, father of Father Showri Raju Narra, parochial vicar at Our Lady of Grace Parish in Maricopa, died in India March 21. Father Showri traveled home for his father’s funeral. Katherine Knight, wife of diocesan Network Administrator David Knight, died March 23. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 5 in St. Cyril Church in Tucson. Catherine Theresa Schilling Long, 88, mother of Father Mark Long, pastor of St. Ambrose Parish, Tucson, died March 23. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 6 in St. Ambrose. Dora Valdez , sister of Father Francisco R. Maldonado, pastor of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Green Valley, died March 30. Father Maldonado was the main celebrant at the Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of the Valley April 6. Damien Huong Tran, brother of Deacon Thai Tran of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Tucson, died April 2. Death notices Carmelite Father Vernon J. Malley, O. Carm., 85, died March 26 in Tucson. Born with the name Joseph Bernard on June 9, 1933, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to Austin and Anne Mary (Joyce) Malley, he attended St. William School in Dorchester and the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Hamilton, Massachusetts. He entered the Carmelite novitiate in 1951 in New Baltimore, Pennsylvania, and professed simple vows on Sept. 3, 1952, taking the religious name of Vernon. He continued his studies at Mount Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and also attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He professed solemn vows with the Carmelites on Sept. 15, 1955, in Niagara Falls. He studied theology at Whitefriars Hall in Washington DC, while concurrently studying at Fordham University, where he earned a master’s in educational psychology in 1962. He was ordained a Carmelite priest on May 23, 1959, at the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Hamilton, Massachusetts. He studied educational administration at the University of Arizona and earned a master’s in counseling psychology from the Adler Institute in Chicago, Illinois, in 1978. He served a decade at a Carmelite high school in Chicago before being appointed principal at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson in 1970. In 1978, he became a full- time counselor at the Catholic Family Consultation Service in the Archdiocese of Chicago, a position he held until 1993. He returned to Tucson as a marriage and family counselor for 10 years at Catholic Community Services. After a year’s sabbatical, he retired while continuing to live at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Priory, located near the Salpointe campus. He is predeceased by his parents, his brothers Edward William and Carmelite Father John Malley, and by his sisters, Kathleen Frances McLaughlin, Ann Joyce Malley and Virginia Nora Byrnes. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Cyril Church in Tucson April 2, followed by interment in Holy Hope Cemetery. ADRIAN, Michigan — Sister Mary Daria Herbella, born Ida Mae, died April 3, in the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 92 and in the 67th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Born in Springerville, Arizona, to Dario and Eladia (Dominquez) Herbella, she graduated from Round Valley High School in Springerville and from Siena Heights College in Adrian with a bachelor’s in English. Sister ministered for 30 years in elementary, junior high and high schools in Michigan, California, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona, including as a teacher at Loretto Catholic School in Douglas, (1959-62) and St. Anthony Catholic School in Casa Grande (1965-67). She also was a pastoral assistant for 17 years in New Mexico and in Pinetop, Arizona. She was a physical exercise aide at the Maria Health Care Center in Adrian and became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2009. She is survived by a sister, Barbara Kasner of Huntington Beach, California, and was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Amelia, Elizabeth, Mary, Dolores, Genevieve and Jacqueline; and brothers John Francis and Charley. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in St. Catherine Chapel in the Dominican Life Center April 5, followed by committal in the Congregation cemetery.
