Mental Health & Elderly: Guest Speaker: Dr. Superna Kundra Talking on Mental Health in Elderly, Dr. Kundra mentioned that mental health problems are constantly on the increase. Approximately 15% of adults aged 60 and over suffer from mental disorder as reported by World Health Organization. Globally, population is ageing rapidly. Between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world’s population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% to 22%. Older people face more physical and mental challenges. Stressors like loss in capacity, decline in functional ability, drop in socioeconomic status result in isolation or psychological distress. The most common mental and neurological disorders are dementia, depression, anxiety disorder and substance use problems. Older peo- ple have hard time coping up with all these problems. Mental health has an impact on physical health. If depression continues untreat- ed, it becomes chronic and problematic. Dementia affects our cognitive function. People’s behavior is affected. There is no medication available to cure demen- tia. Mental health in older adults can be improved by early diagnosis, active and healthy lifestyle, eating nutritious diets including walnuts and with strong sup- port system of family, friends and community. Regular medical checkup with the doctor, playing games like sudoku for active brain are helpful. For acute de- pression, antidepressants and magnetic stimulation machine that stimulates the brain cells can be very helpful. It is important to provide education, support and training to all health care providers to ensure the highest quality of service to people with mental illness.
